Hiked the Seven Pines Trail up by Idyllwild with Randy. This 8 mile hike took us 8 hours! Our moving time was 5.25 hours and 2.75 hours of resting time with a moving average of 1.4 MPH. Blame the dead fall and the altitude – it was difficult to breath. We did not see another person. Should you do this hike have the trail on a hand held GPS unit because there are places where the trail just disappears.  Not surprisingly, there is no phone service on this trail. Also, heavy canopy means lower than expected temperatures. YTD 780.00

Four quarts, six hours, 10 miles and 114° – nice day on the Art Smith Trail. Nice breeze at the top. Bright sun this morning and air seems clearer. Saw one person leaving just at I arrived at about 9:15 AM and met a bicyclist at the 5 mile turn around. YTD 482.00.

I tried my third, and last, KOOG protein bar today. I saved this Honey Almond bar for a hot day to see if it would hold up as well as my standby GORP. It wasn’t 114° all of the time but it was a nice hot day. I like this Honey Almond and shared part of it with a bicyclist who also enjoyed this KOOG bar. This bar, like the Chocolate and the Mocha, held up to the heat. It  A nice, solid, tasty bar. No gooey mess, just a nice solid and tasty bar. As usual, for the first half of the hike the bar was in my lumbar pack and after opening it I moved it to my front pocket and snacked on it, on and off, while hiking.  I thought the bar might melt when it was in my front pocket but it did not – the temperature was over 100° and the bar held up well. The ingredients list is easy to read –  regularly used foods that most everyone would understand – without artificial flavors or colorings. This Honey Almond  bar, like to others, is only 270 calories and has 14 grams of protein. I’m thinking that this Honey Almond bar may be a good substitute, and certainly more convenient, than GORP.  KOOG has a good product here and I would recommend that you pick up a few KOOG bars. Check them out at KoogBar.Com and decide for yourself.

Three Mile Loop up the Art Smith Trail. Weather is not good. Lot of smoke from the Lake Fire fire in the Big Bear area and a fire in a date grove down in Mecca. Air quality sucks. Lungs hurt – I wanted 10 miles – doesn’t feel good being forced off of the hill. YTD 468.00.

Four quarts, six hours, 10 miles and 106° – nice day on the Art Smith Trail. Nice breeze at the top but does not change temperature. Summer is here. Saw Don K and says he is moving to Arizona in a couple of weeks – invited me ove to hike there – should be fun. YTD 448.00.

Seven Miles on the Art Smith Trail. Three and a half up and three and a half down. Nice day for a hike if you like heat. I didn’t get started until shortly before noon and it was 102° then and 106° when I finished. YTD 429.00

I tried my second KOOG protein bar today. I saved the Chocolate until the temperature was over 100° to see how it would hold up in what most people would call excessive heat. I like Chocolate and I like this Chocolate KOOG bar. It did well – it held up really well. A nice, solid, tasty bar. No gooey mess, just a nice solid and tasty bar. For the first half of the hike the bar was in my lumbar pack and after opening it I snacked on it, on and off, while hiking.  I thought the bar might melt when it was in my front pocket but it did not. This surprised me because the temperature was over 100° . The ingredients list is easy to read –  regularly used foods that most everyone would understand – without artificial flavors or colorings. This Chocolate bar is only 270 calories and has 14 grams of protein. I have one more bars to try out and will let you know how it goes. At this time I think this is a good product and would recommend that you pick up a few KOOG bars. I need to find out why it is called a KOOG.  Can you answer the question – What is a KOOG? Intelligent people want to know.

06/03/2015
Back on the trail doing the seven mile loop. Great day for a hike – started around 10:30 AM and did not see another person.  YTD is now 422.00

A friend gave me three KOOG protein bars and I took the Mocha one with me today. I usually do not bother with so-called energy or protein bars because there are most always loaded with sugar in one form or another, taste terrible, melt in the desert heat and then get mushy. My idea of an energy or protein boost is good old fashioned GORP. I enjoyed the taste of this bar – I enjoy the dark, bittersweet and semi-sweet chocolates – so this taste had a pleasant familiarity and was enjoyable.  For the first half of the hike the bar was in my lumbar pack and after opening it I snacked on it, on and off, while hiking.  I thought the bar might melt when it was in my front pocket but it did not. This surprised me because the temperature was in the mid 90’s. The ingredients list is easy to read –  regularly used foods that most everyone would understand. They do use honey and a Costa Rican coffee – but no artificial flavors or colorings. This Mocha bar is only 270 calories and has 14 grams of protein. I have two more bars to try out and will let you know how it goes. At this time I think this is a good product and would recommend that you pick up a few KOOG bars.

Went back to Joshua Tree National Park with Randy. The weather was much nicer. Went to the Desert Queen Mine and it was well worth the trip. We met a member of the Joshua Tree Rescue Team and his dog Oscar. We then went to Pine City Trail – also well worth the effort. Speaking of effort, neither hike was difficult as there was very little elevation changes. Both hikes use same parking area.
