12/03/2016
Did the four mile loop on the Art Smith Trail through Dead Indian Canyon. I saw a large group, perhaps 10 in total, of volunteers of the Friends of the Desert Mountains mucking up the Original Art Smith Trail.

11/30/2016 – 12/04/2016
Went to the Arizona Roundup at Buckskin Mountain State Park with a few friends. Did the Buckskin Trail and wandered on over to the mining sections and ended up on the Desert Bar Trail. I did almost the same hike a couple of days later with Mike B from San Diego while doing some geocaching. Overall about 12 miles.

11/10/2016
Did the three mile loop on the Art Smith Trail through Dead Indian Canyon. Saw three Big Horn Sheep on top of the south side of Dead Indian Canyon and later saw nine Big Horn Sheep in the area east of the fence. I think the the three were part of the nine. Most of the nine were males and some of them were playfully head butting each other – must be starting rutting season.

10/26/2016 – 11/08/2016
Took annual trip to Las Vegas for the SEMA Show. I went a bit early to hike in the Red Rock Canyon and then took time after the convention to go to Death Valley. In between I had time for dinner with a good friend at the Venetian. On the way to Death Valley I went to the infamous Devil’s Hole and a place called Ash Meadows. While in Death Valley I hiked Badwater, the Natural Bridge, Artist Drive, Mesquite Canyon, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes and Golden Canyon. After Death Valley I spent time in Joshua Tree National Park and hiked Ryan Mountain. Want photos? Got hundreds. Click here.

Started out to do the three mile loop on the Art Smith Trail through Dead Indian Canyon. However, I noticed that there was a guided hike when I parked at the Visitor Center. I joined the hike with two ladies who volunteer with Friends of the Desert Mountains and had a good time. If I do that another 8 – 10 times I may actually remember some things. One of the ladies had expert knowledge of the birds while the other knows all about the plant life in the area. We went into Dead Indian Canyon and on the way back I broke from the group and went up the Art Smith Trail. Saw three Big Horn Sheep.

10/19/2016
Went to Joshua Tree National Park with Randy and hiked to Fraggle Rock on a ridge on the eastern edge of the Desert Queen Mine area.  Nice hike – about six miles and saw a couple of cool old mines and lots of interesting stuff along the way. We entered the park through Joshua Tree and used the same trailhead that is used to go to Pine City and is located 1.3 miles north of Park Boulevard, on Desert Queen Mine Road. On our return trip we did attempt a trail through a canyon filled with some huge boulders. The boulders were not our only obstacle. Bees, yes bees seemed to be everywhere. I stopped worrying about breaking a legs and starting thinking about a swarm of bees chasing us off a cliff.

Started hike from here.

Went up to Joshua Tree National Park with Randy. We hiked a 7 mile loop stringing the North View, the Maze and Window Rock Trails together. This is a nice hike – good distance and just enough elevation to get a work-out. Interestingly we could not find this hike on the official map put out by JTNP yet it was well signed.

09/26/2016 – 09/29/2016
Went to San Diego way for a few days. Hiked Iron Mountain in Poway. Went by Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego and picked up some information about their five peak challenge. Seems like fun so I started by doing the Barker Way Trail to Cowles Mountain. I then drove over Big Rock Park and hiked over the Barker Way Trail. I should have kept going from Cowles to Pyles. So, I still need to do Pyles Peak, Kwaay Paay, South Fortuna Mountain and North Fortuna Mountain.

We up to Idywild with Randy to hike the Deer Springs Trail to Suicide Rock. It has been raining for a few days and felt good to get out. Nice day – a bit cool – very nice trail. This is a busy trail on the weekends. A little over 8 miles. Would do it again. First time I saw a decent reason to keep dogs off of the trail. BTW: you need a Wilderness Permit – easy to get at the Ranger Station and zero cost.img_2585No dogs allowed.

Took a walk on the Art Smith Trail – Seven Mile Loop.  Only saw two people today – one was a regular and the other was an unfriendly government bot with a backpack that had antenna sticking out the back probably hoping to track Big Horn Sheep. I did see three Big Horn – see if you can see them in this photo.  Beautiful day for a hike.

Three miles on the Art Smith Trail. Saw ten Big Horn Sheep in the same place I saw ten yesterday. Very unusually. If I get up early tomorrow I’ll take a walk and see if they are still there.

09/09/206
On my way up the street I saw an Egret AKA a Great White Heron in a neighbors yard. Three miles on the Art Smith Trail. Saw ten Big Horn Sheep about a mile or so up the trail. Also saw a cool ride parked by the road on my way out. Nice van in the background.

Did the Ramona Trail to Thomas Mountain with Randy today. Nice day – except for gnats or midges. Tool Box Springs is about dry – the flow has been reduced to a trickle. About 9.5 miles.

08/31/2016
Five miles on the Art Smith Trail. Saw one lone Big Horn on my way off the trail by the flood control berm.

08/23/2016 – 08/26/2016
Went to the beaches for a few days on my way to Fight Club Orange County in Costa Mesa on Thursday night. Started out in Santa Monica at the Stairs on Adelaide Dr by 4th Street. I did the concrete stairs five time (down and up) 1,700 stairs and the wooden stairs twice (down and up) 796 stairs. Total stairs is 2,496 – I’ll let you calculate the distance. On Wednesday I went down to Palisades Park and did the stairs down to the bridge across the coast highway to the beach. I also drove to Venice Beach and pedaled my bicycle from the Venice Pier to the Santa Monica Pier. Thursday was spent mostly walking around Huntington Beach. Overall, a very nice few days.

Four miles on the Art Smith Trail. All alone on the trail today.

08/11/2016 – 08/15/2016
Went up to Big Bear to do some hiking and see the annual car show.
Did hike up to the top of Snow Summit – only a mile and a half but very steep. Very nice hike. Also hiked the Cougar Crest Trail up to the Pacific Crest Trail from the Marina – another nice hike. Total hiking was about 10 miles.
Big Bear was very nice, in the high 70’s and low 80’s and down into the 50’s at night.

08/05/2016 – 08/07/2016
Went down San Diego way to the town of Lakeside to camp at Lake Jennings. Had a nice campsite with an unobstructed view of the lake. Hiked an easy 5.0+ miles around the lake. Sunday was spent in Carlsbad and Oceanside with some relatives from the east coast. Overall a very decent weekend.

07/27/2016 – 08/01/2016
Took a short trip to Las Vegas to watch a night time off-road race on Saturday the 30th. Also, took side trips to the Amboy Crater, Red Rock Canyon, Lake Mead and Joshua Tree National Park. Overall, about 15 miles. At JTNP I camped at Jumbo Rock and moved my site because of bees.  When driving out of the park I stopped at the Cholla Cactus Gardens and there were signs saying that “thirsty bees may swarm vehicle looking for water.” I didn’t stay there long – the bees have a place in the ecosystem but not in my truck.
I hiked up Amboy Crater, Turtlehead Peak in Red Rock Canyon and Ryan Mountain at JTNP.
Las Vegas has a new attraction on the way in to town called ‘Seven Magic Mountains.’ Think artificial, copy of  Stonehenge in fluorescent colors.

Did the Santa Monica Stairs – both sets – twice on my way. Took an OK photo of the Worlds Smallest Front Yard in Venice, probably would get a better photo in the morning. Overall a nice couple of days.

Went to Joshua Tree National Park with Randy. Spent the night at Ryan Campground. Met some cool people from Fullerton/Pomona. Met a couple of young ladies on a road trip doing live broadcasts to Facebook. Did not do as much hiking as planned. We did hike up Inspiration Peak from Keys View,  the most popular overlook in the park. On a clear day you can see the Coachella Valley cities, Salton Sea, Mount San Jacinto and Mount San Gorgonio. The weather could have been better but overall a really nice trip.

Went to Joshua Tree NP with Randy. Hiked to Samuelson’s Rocks – a very interesting place. I was thinking that it would be one giant rock but it turned out to be eight rocks that have various religious and/or political commentary carved into the rocks. After that we killed some time at the Pink House and a short hike along the Wonderland Wash Trail. We finished up with a two hour tour of the Key’s Ranch.
BTW: The park people will not give you directions so the GPS coordinates for Samuelson’s Rocks are 34.04722, -116.2425. Do a little research to get a comfortable hike. We ‘bush-whacked’ about two mile across the desert without a trail – so, know where you are going.

Went to Lake Perris for the annual Teardrop Trailer Gathering. Since we no longer have a teardrop we camped with our friend Mike B. Mike and I took a hike on Friday intending to go around the lake but the dam is closed so we opted to rent a boat and look for geocaches on Alessandro Island. Really great hiking and even better company. I stayed around camp on Saturday – gotta do some socializing. I’m guessing, overall, I did eight miles.

Went down San Diego Way to have Dave do a little more work on the Van. I hung around Imperial Beach and Coronado and participated in the Saint Patrick Half Marathon in El Cajon. Did some hiking at the Santa Margarita Preserve in Fallbrook, the Cabrillo National Mountment in San Diego, the Scripps Coastal Reserve in La Jolla, Mission Trails Regional Park in San Diego, Fortuna Mountain in San Diego and Tecolote Canyon National Park also in San Diego. It would be easy to spend a day at each of these places. Overall I probably logged 15 miles. I especially remember the Climbers Loop Trail in the Mission Trails Regional Park – it was short, steep and gnarly.

First day out on the trails this year. Weather has been and continues to be awful. Heavy rains the last few days and very cold. Snow on the mountains around us. I’m not going to keep track of mileage this year – I topped 1,000 miles last year and that is enough. Three Mile Loop through Dead Indian Canyon today. Not many people. Mid 50’s around noon.
