09/18/2017
Went “Jeeping” with Randy to the Virginia Dale Mine southeast of 29 Palms. Not much hiking but some amazing scenery. We first saw the Gold Crown Mine, then, I’m calling the second the Arasta Mine (see the first photo), we did not make it to the OK Mine, and finished at the Virginia Dale Mine. Lots of mines out that way.
On the way back we went into JTNP and did the Geological Tour Trail – 18 miles on dirt road. The Park wants you to have a 4 X 4 but most any high clearance vehicle would do the job  – a Jeep Wrangler is ideal.

09/17/2017

Did a short hike up Developers Trail to the O Canada connector trail between Developers’ Trail and the original Art Smith Trail.
Saw a few Big Horn Sheep – probably the same group for the past few days.

Hot and muggy but no rain.

08/09/2017 – 09/09/2017
Redwoods Trip:
Santa Barbara – Los Prietos Campground.
Stayed overnight and did hike around the perimeter of the campground. Saw a bunch of wild Turkeys roaming free. A nice place but not close enough to town to warrant a return trip.

Morro Bay RV Park
Stayed two nights. No real hiking. Did walk along the shore and around the park. Not my favorite place to camp – really just a parking lot.
I do like and would return to Morro Bay.

Geyserville / Liberty Glen –
We were supposed to stay two nights but we got burned out the first night so we drove north on 101 to a Rest Area to finish the night. We had decided not to stay the second night because there was no water anywhere in the campground and the Porta-Potties that were there were filthy. Why would the State of California allow campfires when there is no water?

Burlington Campground – Avenue of the Giants – very nice campground.
Spent one night and would do this one again. Right in the middle of the Redwoods. Absolutely gorgeous. Did some hiking around the perimeter and along a creek.

Pamplin Grove – Carlotta
This was our main destination – where we met up with a group of camping buddies. Five nights here. Wonderful time. Got in some nice hiking in a beautiful area. Right on the Van Duzen River. Lots of good food and beverages. No practical jokes. Enjoyed the people way more than the location.

Patrick’s Point – On the Ocean, north of Eureka
Another one I would re-do. One night right on the Ocean. Cold and windy but absolutely gorgeous. Lots of nice hiking.

French Gulch – Did not stay
This sounded cool but turned out that there was no campground. We could have done the Yellow Post thing but decided to move on down the road and found Whiskeytown Lake. On the way to French Gulch we stopped at a fast food joint in Weaverville, on Route 299, and unexpectedly met a friend and a very prominent attorney, and motorcycle enthusiast, from Palm Desert who was traveling to Oregon for the Solar Eclipse.

Whiskeytown Lake – Caught the Solar Eclipse
Two nights here, and another I would re-visit. Right by the lake. Did some hiking around the park. Park Rangers passed out eclipse glasses and a good time was had by all.

Bailey’s Cove – Shasta Lake
This, like French Gulch, was selected strictly by name and it was nice. I would re-visit, preferably with someone named Bailey and a beverage, or two, with Bailey in the name. Spent two nights. Hiked around the cove and visited the Shasta Caverns. Did take a dip in Lake Shasta – very cold.
Very enjoyable place.

Manzanita Lake Campground – Lassen Volcanic National Park
Four nights here. If you have the time you could hike every day for a month and not repeat a hike. I did the Lassen Peak – starting out at about 8,000 foot elevation and ending at about 10,500. Total of five miles. The 2.5 miles up was the toughest 2.5 mile hike I can remember. Well maintained trail. Some snow but nothing to get excited about. Also did the Bumpass Hell Trail Hike and some other small hikes. Nice campground, very nice park. Met some guy from San Jacinto.

Reno / Carson City NV – two nights in a hotel.
This was a “let’s get cleaned up and spend some time in civilization” stop.
It was OK. Got some good food and took in the sights.

Tahoe State Recreation Area Campground  – Tahoe City CA
Another two nights in a gorgeous place next to Lake Tahoe. We were right in the city and could walk to the Post Office, a coffee shop, a CVS and a Vons’. Nice location right on the lake. Got some hiking in around the waterfront but got scared off when the Ranger was telling me about bear activity in the woods.

Sherwin Creek Campground – Mammoth Lakes
Four nights because I did not want to be on the road over Labor Day weekend. A very nice campground, right on the creek. We ended up there because a friend from Desert Hot Springs was there. Ideal if you enjoy Off Highway Vehicle locations. I hiked to Sherwin Lake one day and another day went to the Devils Post Pile and Rainbow Falls. Also visited Hot Creek and the sulfur pools.

Lone Pine Campground – Lone Pine – Whitney Portal CG had no water
One night here. Nice location and on a creek. Alabama Hills and the Cowboy Museum were very cool. Worth doing again.

Red Rock Canyon California
Two nights in a wonderful place. Nice hike up to Whistler’s Rock. Very nice location. Worth visiting again.

Mojave River Forks Campground – Hesperia CA – Did not stay, real dive.

Joshua Tree National Park.
One night in one of my favorite places. It was raining on and off when we got there and all night. Was going to hike Ryan Mountain in the morning but did not want to end up in a downpour.

08/06/2017

Had to go over to Palm Springs so I went up the South Lykken Trail for a couple of hours. Rained hard last night so the trail was a bit messy. Spent some time talking with a guy from Germany, the only other person on the trail.

07/31/2017

Connected with a couple of ‘Trail Buddies’ that I’ve know for a few years – really nice conversation.

07/28/2017
Hiked the Ernie Maxwell Trail in Idyllwild. About 5 miles round trip. This is a real nice trail in a beautiful mountain setting. Easiest access is from Humber Park but the trail head is not marked so ask other hiker in the parking lot for directions. Most people go to Humber Park for the Devil’s Slide Trail but the Ernie Maxwell is a popular jogging trail for the locals. You can also access the Ernie Maxwell Trail by putting 54940 Tahquitz View Dr with zip code 92549 into your GPS.

Not on the Ernie Maxwell Trail – Just a new trail I want to hike.

On the trail – lots of rock climbing on Tahquitz Rock aka Lily Rock.

07/13/2017
Went ‘Jeeping’ with Randy from Hespirea to Fawnskin via Coxey Road. About 20 miles on a moderately easy dirt road. Drove by Big Pine Flat Campground – good for four wheel drive people – and Hanna Flat Campground just outside of Fawnskin – good for everyone. Saw a modern day ‘Wanted Poster’ along the way. A lot of real isolated living along this road.
Stopped in Big Bear and visited with John and Marie.
Nice day, decent weather, good company.
What else do you want?

07/02/2017 – 07/05/2017
Lake Jennings Campground in Lakeside CA outside of San Diego.
Moved over her from Kumeyaay and got in a nice hike on the Flume Trail from the campground to El Monte Park with Mike B. I’m guessing the hike was 6-8 miles. We called Uber for a ride back. I did the hike around the lake last year and that was about 5 miles.

GeoCache inside a rock! First time I’ve seen this.

Found a GeoCache.

06/30/2017 – 07/01/2017
Kumeyaay Lake Campground in the Mission Trails Regional Park down in San Diego.
This is a nice campground but is only open on Fridays and Saturdays. Camped with friends and had a great evening at ‘The Hanger.”

06/22/2017 – 06/25/2017
Spent a few days at Dripping Springs Campground just outside Temecula. Did 4 miles on the Ramona Trail on the way Thursday and 4 miles on the Dripping Springs Trail on Friday. Nice campground. Lots of shade.

Went ‘Jeeping’ with Randy. Started on a back road out of Pioneertown and ended up at Baldwin Lake. Went up to Tip Top Mountain, crossed the Pacific Crest Trail and saw the “Eye of God” rock around Baldwin Lake.

I like this sign!

“Eye of God”

Pacific Crest Trail Sign

We’ve been told that Burns Canyon Road-2NO2 is a well traveled overland trail from Pioneertown into Baldwin Lake.
Editor’s Note: No way this is welled traveled.

Ever file a Mining Claim?

Spent a night in Imperial Beach and then two nights in Oceanside.
Took the train back to San Diego to watch the 2017 UEFA Champions League Final between Italy and Spain played in Cardiff, Wales. I watched the game at The Field Irish Pub. Spain won 4-1.

05/29/2017
Went over to the Living Desert and did the Eisenhower Loop. Nice trail on Memorial Day. Saw a few Big Horn Sheep. 6 miles.

05/26/2017
Went up to JTNP with Randy. We drove up and down Old Dale Road in Randy’s new Jeep. The highlight, for me, was the car wash – a wash a couple miles or so off of the Old Dale Road where a dozen or more old cars were abandoned in a wash. We stopped at or hiked to Mission Well, the Golden Egg Mine, the Sunrise Mill, the Car Wash, the Gold Rose Mill, the Gold Rose Well, and Sunrise Mill. I most likely missed something but overall it was a really nice trip.

05/24/17

Went up to Julian CA and camped at the KQ Ranch with some friends. This is a nice private/membership campground. Nice company, nice weather – hiking was limited. Went to a place called the Observer’s Inn nearby for a guided tour of the night sky. Would like to explore more of the Laguna Mountains.

04/28/2017
Went up Developers Trail. Hiked the O Canada connector trail between Developers’ Trail and the original Art Smith Trail. 3.00 Miles.

Note: Mystery Solved! For a few months now I’ve seen 70+ vehicles parked along Highway 74 in the area that would be used by hikers. I thought, back in January, that this wont last long – just a bunch of resolution hikers. But I’ve come to realize that the cars and trucks belong to people working inside the Big Horn Country Club. Apparently, BHCC will only allow a limited number of work vehicle to park inside the walls – the rest walk-in or car pool with someone else. BHCC is re-building the main club house.

04/27/217
Went up Developers Trail to the Canyon Trail to the Scheys’ Trail back to the Developers Trail and then down to the O’Canada Trail to the original Art Smith Trail and back down the Developers Trail. 4.00 Miles. Look at the size of this Chuckwalla Lizard, the second largest lizard in the United States, next in size only to the Gila Monster. The male Chuckwalla can measure up to 18 inches in length, while the female is somewhat smaller.

I don’t want to be near this guy when he is hungry.

Chuckwalla Lizard get some rays.

At least 70  cars were parked on Hwy 74 and both parking lot at the Visitor Center were full! Lots and lots of people. I heard one ‘lady’ yelling at a guy with Disabled Plates on his car for NOT parking in a disabled person parking space. She was livid! She was yelling – if you move your car over there then I can park here. WTF – try decaf lady.!

02/09/2017  – 02/11/2017
Went up to Johnson Valley for the King of Hammers off road races. This was my first time there and it was very nice. This is a ten day event. A combination of off-road desert racing and rock crawling. If you like off-road racing and you like rock crawling then you will most likely like King of Hammers. It is the largest off-road race in America. Take a look at it – you might find it enjoyable. I can not tell you how many people were there but I would say it was in the thousands. Wikipedia says: “There are more than 400 teams and 30,000 spectators for this event”. I’m thinking that everyone there, except me, had a dirt vehicle of some kind. I would have liked it more if the weather was nicer – but what the hell, I’m in the desert at an off-road race. I met people from Japan, Europe and Australia. Check out You Tube and you’ll probably see some cool video.02/08/2017
Went up the Art Smith Trail about 5 miles or so. Hiked the O Canada connector trail between Developers’ Trail and the original Art Smith Trail. 67 cars were parked on Hwy 74 at Noon. More in the parking lots. Lots of people.

Couldn’t hike our first choice,  Warren Canyon,  because of the underbrush, mud and wet rocks, so we went over to Lake Poway and found a half a dozen geocaches. Went t o Salerno Winery on Sunday and saw some crazy sculptures.

Men at work.

Man Geocaching.

Lake Poway

Man ascending. Look out for the lightening bolts.

The Birth of Music.
