I has been awhile. Way to much working and not enough hiking.
Re-doing home study workbook, the Internet course, SEMA and a week in Death Valley.

09-24-2012
I haven’t been on the hiking trails for a while – I picked up a bicycle and got distracted. Today I hiked the Cahuilla Hills Bump and Grind Loop – 1. Nice 77° at 6:15 AM and 88° when I was done. Seeing more and more people on the Bump and Grind.. 4.75 Miles. YTD 367.00.

09-13-2012
Haven’t been out for a while – lots of rain. Hiked the 3 mile loop – Art Smith Trail, Sheys Trail and Canyon Trail. Saw a king snake, did not see any people. Nice 78° at 6:30 AM and 79° when I was done at 8:00 AM.  YTD 362.75.

09-06-2012
Hiked the Cahuilla Hills Bump and Grind Loop – 1. Nice 80° at 6:30 AM and 89° when I was done. Saw a lot more people on the Bump and Grind – vacation must be over. 4.75 Miles. YTD 359.75.

08-30-2012
Hiked the 3 mile loop – Art Smith Trail, Sheys Trail and Canyon Trail.   YTD 355.

08-27-2012
Split Rock Loop is about 2 miles so I was doing this on my way out of the park. On the hike I saw a sign for Face Rock an additional one-tenth of a mile so I went to Face Rock and then went further thinking it would take me back to the parking lot. This added another mile or so to the hike. Call it 3.5 miles. YTD 352.0.

08-26-2012
Arrived at Joshua Tree National Park around 1:00 PM from the 29 Palms entrance and headed to the Jumbo Rocks Campground. Did the Skull Rock hike and a bit more – call it 2.5 miles. YTD 348.5.

08-23-2012
Salt Creek InterpretiveTrail is an easy half-mile walk on a boardwalk. Kinds of cool but not exercise. On this day there was a lot of annoying flies – I really did not want to stay. I stopped at the Mesquite Flats San Dune outside of Stovepipe Well and walked on the dunes for a while. I then went to the Ubehebe (big basket) Crater and walked to the Little Ubehebe Crater. This is a place I like to see whenever I’m in Death Valley – it is always windy at the crater. I’m guessing I hiked 3 miles. I spent the night at the Mesquite Spring Campground – I was the only one there. YTD 346.

08-22-2012
Arrived in Death Valley and stopped at Badwater which is the lowest elevation in the US at 282 feet below sea level. Whenever you go to Death Valley you should stop at Badwater if for no other reason than to stretch and walk around. There is a large parking lot and the 2 mile trail or should I say walk is well marked. I was a bit surprised at how many people were there. I enter Death Valley through Baker and then Shoshone on CA 127 and then turn on 178 AKA Badwater Road. I stayed at the Texas Spring Campground. YTD 342.5.

08-22-2012
On the way to Death Valley so stopped at the Amboy Crater. It was raining on and off since 29 Palms. I got to the top of the crater and it started to rain. Got soaked. Still a good time. 3.5 Miles. YTD 340.5.

08-20-2012
Art Smith Trail – Seven Mile loop. Start at Art Smith Trail parking lot and head up Developers’ Trail (Dead Indian Canyon is closed). Connect with the Hopalong Cassidy Trail. Go north to the Scheys Trail and head west to the Art Smith trail and head back to the parking lot. I did not meet anyone along the way. Right at 7 miles. Started at 6:45 with a 83° temperature and ended at 10:45 when it was 101° – downright balmy I’d say. YTD 337.

08-16-2012
Combination of bike ride and walk. 4 miles to the Art Smith Trail parking lot and back. Picked up an older Beach Cruiser – doesn’t do hills well. Fun riding back. YTD 330.

08-11-2012
Hurkey Creek Campground. 3 miles. Got very wet – good fun. YTD 326.

08-06-2012

08-03-2012
Sara’s Loop. Cahuilla Hills Park to the Herb Jeffries Trail to the Hopalong Cassidy Trail to the Gabby Hayes Trail back to the park. Right at 2.00 miles in about 1 hour. Hiking in 100° is a lot of fun.. YTD 317.

07-29-2012
Ramona Trail to Tool Box Springs and beyond. I was in Garner Valley on the weekend looking for a meteor shower. I did not find the meteor shower but decide to hike the Ramon Trail. The trail head is on Highway 74 about 3.5 miles east of Lake Hemet. The hike to Tool Box Springs is about 3.5 miles and then I kept going another half mile or so to Thomas Mountain Road. This hike is 1500 feet straight up and straight down with some beautiful views of the valley below. I’m calling this 8 miles.  Dirt Devil messed up the van – inside and out – pretty bad. YTD 317.

07-27-2010
Garner Valley 2 miles. YTD 309

07-27-2012
Hiked the 3 mile loop – Art Smith Trail, Sheys Trail and Canyon Trail, plus added the first Oasis. Nice day – 73° at 6:25 AM start and 84° at the end at 8:15 AM. 4 miles.  YTD 307.

07-24-2012

07-21 and 22 – 2012
Went to Hidden Valley Campground in the Joshua Tree National Park. I did not take a formal hike and did not have my GPS with me but I did a lot of walking/hiking around. Call it 5 miles. YTD 297.

07-19-2012
Art Smith Trail – Seven Mile loop. Start at Art Smith Trail parking lot and head up Developers’ Trail (Dead Indian Canyon is closed). Connect with the Hopalong Cassidy Trail. Go north to the Scheys Trail and head west to the Art Smith trail and head back to the parking lot. I did not meet anyone along the way. Right at 7 miles. 07-16-2012
Hiked the 3 mile loop – Art Smith Trail, Sheys Trail and Canyon Trail. Nice day – 84° at start and 97° at end. One hour and 45 minutes. YTD 260.

07-11-2012
Did not take an actual hike today. Randy and I talked about hiking on Thomas Mountain in the Garner Valley area. The trail is an old dirt road and because there is a small dry camping area around the top I decided to drive the road. I thought the trail was a 10 mile horseshoe shaped  loop but my truck told be it was closer to 20 miles. I did stop a few times to walk around so I’m adding 1.25 mile to my YTD figure. 257.00 YTD

07-10-2012
Went back to hike the Cahuilla Hills Bump and Grind Loop – 2. Nice 99° at 9:30 AM and 108° when I was done. When I reached the Bump and Grind I looked down to Painters Path and counted zero cars! Apparently, a lot of people out in the morning but not later in the day. I took my GPS but the batteries died on the last leg so I used calculation from the last hike to get an accurate total of 5.92 miles. I’m still going to call this 6.00 miles until I get a more accurate GPS reading. YTD 255.75.

07-06-2012
Hiked the Cahuilla Hills Bump and Grind Loop – 2. Nice 75° at 6:00 AM and 85° when I was done. When I reached the Bump and Grind I looked down to Painters Path and counted 53 cars! Lot of people out this morning. This loop utilizes the Gabby Hayes trail and does not retrace any of the trails – I like this. I’m going to call this 6.00 miles until I use my GPS. YTD 249.75.

07-02-2012
Hiked the Cahuilla Hills Bump and Grind Loop – 1. Nice 75° at 6:00 AM and 83° when I was done. Saw a couple dozen dedicated locals on the Bump and Grind. Also saw a Fish and Game truck driving up the hill. 4.75 Miles. YTD 243.75.

Go north to the Scheys Trail and head west to the Art Smith trail and head back to the parking lot. I met Kim along the way so we hiked together. Right at 7 miles. Started at 6:15 with a 75° temperature and ended at 11:00 when it was 95° – downright balmy I’d say. YTD 234.5

06-20-2012
First day of summer. Took a walk up the Bump and Grind. About 3.5 miles . Started at 2:30 with the temperature at 108° and 111° at the end at 4:00 PM. Beautiful day – did not see another person hiking. Went up the Hopalong Cassidy to the Herb Jeffries to the Bump and Grind and down on the Mike Schuller. YTD 227.5.

06-18-2012
Sara’s Loop. Cahuilla Hills Park to the Herb Jeffries Trail to the Hopalong Cassidy Trail to the Gabby Hayes Trail back to the park. Right at 2.00 miles in about 1 hour. Hiking in 105° is a lot of fun – good to be back in the desert. YTD 224.

16-17-2012
San Onofre State Beach Campground at Cristianito. YTD 218. Put on hiking boots and walked back to the beach and then along the water for about three quarters of a mile I walked by an area where workers were taking down sets of viewing bleachers. I’m guessing there was a surfing contest earlier in the day. I kept walking south until I found a trail taking me up on to the bluffs. I hiked around awhile and then hiked back on an unused paved road – I’m thinking it was the old PCH – back to the campground trail. Call it 6 miles. I don’t know for certain but I’m thinking the temperatures do not get much above 70° for the three days we were at the campground. YTD 222.

06-16-2012
San Onofre State Beach Campground at Cristianito. Put on hiking boots and walked to the beach and then along the water for about a half mile. Not much sun but tons of surfers. Surfing did not look all that good. Call it 4 miles. YTD 216

06-15-2012
San Onofre State Beach Campground at Cristianito. We went camping for a few days. We thought we made reservations for the Mateo campground but we were sent to the Cristianito campground which is about 1.5 miles from the water. I do not know the name of the trail(s) but there is only one from the campground to the beach. After setting up camp I walked about a mile up the trail to see the ocean. I was wearing sandals so I did not go further. Call it 2 miles – no GPS. BTW the campground is within Camp Pendleton and is named for the Cristianito earthquake fault that runs next to the San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant. YTD 212.

06-13-2012
Sara’s Loop. Cahuilla Hills Park to the Herb Jeffries Trail to the Hopalong Cassidy Trail to the Gabby Hayes Trail back to the park. Right at 2.00 miles in about 1 hour. Somehow it seems harder at 5:00 PM than at 8:00 AM – go figure. YTD 210.

06-12-2012
Hiked the 3 mile loop – Art Smith Trail, Sheys Trail and Canyon Trail. Nice day – warming up – gotta get out more. YTD 208.

06-08-2012

Went to the Henderson Trail in Palm Desert with John and Marie. Nice day and nice walk. The trail has been re-routed so I need to use my GPS – call it 2 miles for now. YTD 203.7.

05-31-2012
Went to Horsethief Creek with Randy. We thought we would get out of the heat but … at least it wasn’t 114°. This was a nice hike with shady areas along the way. We got to the creek and started looking for the corral the thieves would use to pen the horses. We thought for certain the corral would be by the water. We decided to rest, have lunch and then head back. On the way back we found the corral – so much for logic. Still a good hike I would do again. Our total distance was 5.7 miles because we did a bit of side excursions. Your total would be closed to 5.0. Our moving time was 3 hours 40 minutes and resting time was 2 hours and 9 minutes. We stopped at the Sugarloaf Cafe on the way home – very nice. Use the directions to the Sawmill trail – about 15 miles up Highway 74 from the intersection of Monterey Ave (Route 74) and Highway 111. Go past the Sugar Loaf Cafe and turn left at the sign for the Sawmill Trail. YTD 201.7

I remember them building the Hopalong Cassidy trail seven or eight years ago. Very nice day for a hike, mid 80’s and lots of sun. Moving time was 3 hours and 50 minuets and resting time was 1 hour. Not bad. YTD 92.25.
