This was a tough hike that, when completed, take you to the top of Mount San Jacinto and covers 12 miles round trip. We did not go all the way. Our total trip was 6.50 miles and it took us 7 hours! The elevation is way more than I am used to the steepness of the trail never stopped. Our moving time was 4:20 and resting time was 2:40 and we averaged 1.5 mph. Gotta do this again. 05/12 – 16/2014
Spent one night at the Salton Sea State Recreational Area Visitor Center campground. Nice area with running water and showers. Peddled the bicycle around and watched people fish. Lots of dead fish at the waters edge. Lots of Flies – but flies disappear at sundown – where do they go?
Left for the Agua Caliente Campground in San Diego County in the early morning. I stopped in Ocotillo Wells  along the way and arrived at Agua Caliente around noon. Mike arrived and we did the Moonlight Canyon Trail (2.5 miles) in mid-afternoon. We did the Ocotillo Ridge Trail, Desert Overlook Trail and the Marsh Trail on the 14th. Maybe another 2.5 miles.
Mike left the afternoon of the 14th and I spent the night.
I headed back on the 15th but saw a place called Blair Valley so I spent the night there. I drove my bicycle along one side of the dry lake bed looking for the Pictographs Trail but did not find it so I drove the truck to the other side but did not want to test soft sand. Found a short hiking trail and drove the bicycle around some more.
Overall, walking around, biking and hiking, I’m giving myself 15 miles so YTD is 277.75.

05/04/2014
Went up the Art Smith Trail to the intersection with the Schey’s Trail. On the way down I met a guy who asked me if he was headed to the Art Smith Trail trailhead. I told him no. He told me he was coming from Cahuilla Hills Park and he had a friend waiting for him at the Art Smith Trail parking lot. He should have turned east at the end of the Hopalong Cassidy Trail but instead turned west. He was about two mile up the trail and out of water. I gave him water and guided him down the hill. In the meantime his friend had called 911 and we saw a CHP helicopter flying around. When we got to the bottom there were at least eight police cars waiting. Call it 6.25 miles. YTD 257.25.

05/02/2014
Four miles on the Art Smith Trail. Two up to the first oasis and two back. YTD 251.00.

04/29 – 30/2014
Went to Joshua Tree National Park – not a great idea. As I was driving on Interstate 10 the wind and dust was making driving difficult. As I drove into the park the air cleared up but the winds persisted. I settled into the White Tank campground and the walked the Arch Rock path, a half mile nature hike, just to get stretched out. That was nice but I needed more so I wandered across the street to see what I could see. I’ll give myself 2.00 miles. Not much to do at camp so I drove 10 miles to Ryan Mountain and hiked to the top. 1.5 miles up and 1.5 miles down. Very steep – good walk. 5457 feet at the top. The wind was very strong – not unlike the wind at windy point. I spoke with people as the were going up (passing me) or coming down. At the top I meet a couple from Nashua New Hampshire and had them take my picture by the 5,5457 sign. Excellent views of Lost Horse, Queen, and Pleasant Valleys.
The winds persisted all day long with temperatures in the 70’s until the sun went down. The night sky was spectacular but very cold. Around 4:00 AM I woke up thinking a group of people were rocking the truck back and forth but it was just the wind. I was 49 degrees Fahrenheit when I got up around 6:30 AM.
I was not happy with the wind and temperatures so I drove another 35 miles or so east on Interstate 10 to the Corn Springs campground. The campground is at the end of a dirt road –  almost 10 miles and very bumpy.  I was the only person there so I set up camp and decided to use the bicycle. It was windy but not like JTNP and it was warmer However, about a half mile into my ride the wind and dust came up and sand blasted my face. At some point you just gotta say what the hell and move on.
Between hiking and biking I’m adding 8.  mile for a year to date of 247.00.

04/28/2014
Went to Capp Adams / Homme Park in Palm Desert and walked to Cahuilla Hills Park to take the Herb Jeffries Trail to the Hopalong Cassidy Trail to the Cross. Took the Hopalong Cassidy Trail back to the Homestead Trail down to the parking lot. I could see and smell the fire at the Fairfield Inn on Highway 111 on the upper reaches of the hike. 5.00 Miles. Four miles on the Art Smith Trail. Two up to the first oasis and two back. I met seven wonderful young ladies today. The are in town for a bachelorette party – the lovely bride and her six gorgeous bridesmaids. Foolishly they asked my advice on maintaining a happy marriage, naturally I answered with some words of wisdom and more foolishly these nice ladies listened. Best wishes to each of you and the groom. YTD 234.00.

I was in Seal Beach and rode my bicycle around the beach area, around town and on the The San Gabriel River Trail. The San Gabriel River Trail (also known as SGRT) is a 28-mile bike path along the San Gabriel River through El Dorado Regional Park and onto street bike trails near the Alamitos Bay Marina in Los Angeles County. I was not sure where I was but learned later that I turned back just short of the park. I’m guessing another 15 miles. YTD 174.00.

03/20/2014
I was in Huntington Beach and rode my bicycle down to Newport Beach and around Newport Beach and Huntington Beach. My GPS was not working put would guess at least 20 Miles. YTD 159.00.

Potato Mountain outside of Claremount. I needed to go into Orange County and went the five miles up to the top of Potato Mountain. Nice hike but nothing great. I did notice that at least half the people I saw had either a large knife or bear spray. Apparently, there are a lot of bears, bob cats and mountain lions in the area. YTD 139.00.

Did the Art Smith Trail – Seven Mile Loop – or at least most of it. On the way up I met a guy named Dan and as we hiked he showed me a different way to connect to the Art Smith trail from the Schey’s trail.  I’m thinking it was a bit shorted but I will not know for certain until I re-trace the route with my GPS unit. Went with Randy up Murray Peak—also known as Murray Hill—in Palm Springs. We started from the Rim Rock Center in Cathedral City and used the trail system above the water tanks. You could have a more direct route by using Bogart Trail. I cannot give you the specific trails we used because there are so many but you could map your own way using Google Earth. We went around the back side using the Wildhorse and Clara Burges Trails. We were surprised at the number of people going in our direction. Some guy blew by us going up wearing those shoes that look like gloves – he was coming down while we were still going up. We met a real talker from Texas and a couple of ladies hiking with jewelery. When we reached the top there were three young ladies taking photos are having a good time. We started down before them but they were jogging down the slope and disappeared into the distance before I was a quarter of the way down. It is amazing what you can do when you are young and healthy. The view on the way up – especially the ridge walk- are spectacular. Here we are at the end of January and we could not see any snow on the surrounding mountains. The views at the top are also spectacular – panoramic – of  the whole valley. It took us 7 hours (4 moving and 3 stopped) to go the 8.5 miles. Well worth the effort. BYW, our starting elevation was right at 300 feet and the top of the peak is 2,250 feet. YTD 57.75.

Took a walk with Randy and we did the Art Smith Trail – Seven Mile Loop. Start at Highway 74 and hike the Developer’s Trail and connect with the Hopalong Cassidy Trail. Go north on the Hopalong Cassidy Trail to the Scheys Trail and head west up the Schey’s Trail to the Art Smith trail and head south on the Art Smith Trail back to Highway 74. Our moving time was 4 hours and our resting time was 2.5 hours and our average moving time was 1.9 mph. The Hopalomg Cassisy Trail is still messed up from the rain storms last October and November – be careful out there. It was a very nice day with the temperature in the 80’s. YTD 34.25.
